Miles had a hard time focusing on his work having seen Brandy earlier. He logged on to Facebook and searched for her now that he knew her last name. A picture of Brandy holding Kira dressed in a pink, frilly dress popped on the screen. He was overwhelmed by the photo, and his eyes welled with tears. Someone knocked on his office door, startling him. Miles wiped his eyes and said, “Come in.”

It was his secretary, Norma, with mail and messages in hand.

“Norma, I’m leaving out in a few minutes,” he said, receiving the pile of notes. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

She nodded. “Okay.” His eyes followed her as she walked out; he wanted to make sure she had closed the door. He continued admiring pictures of Kira and Brandy. Brandy was right; she does have my eyes.

He picked up the phone and called Shianne. He waited a few moments before leaving a message. “Baby, I can’t go tonight. I have some things going on here. I’ll call you tonight when I get home. Have a good time.”

Miles had promised Shianne a few weeks earlier that he would try to make her company’s fundraiser. He hoped declining at the last minute wouldn’t cause any friction between them, but he wasn’t up to it.

Shianne called back fifteen minutes later.

“Hey, baby. Are you all right?”

“Yes,” he said, viewing more pictures on Brandy’s page. “Why do you ask?”

“You’re not going with me tonight.”

“Baby, I’m so tired.”

“Ah, baby, I want you to go with me, but I’ll forgive you. You’re always going to these things with me. I’ll give you a break.”

Miles sighed, all the time wondering if he should tell her he had run into Brandy. “Thanks, baby.”

“Am I going to see you later tonight?” Shianne asked.

“Urn, I don’t know. What time is the fundraiser over?”

“It’s dinner and dancing, so...”

“You’ll be late getting in.”

“No, I plan to be out of there by at least 9:30.”

“Yeah, that’s what you say. Nine-thirty will turn into midnight knowing your boss.”

“I’ll call you when I get home.”

“Okay.”

“Love you.”

“Love you more.”

Miles held the receiver in his hand for several moments before hanging up. He cared deeply for Shianne but seeing Brandy brought back old feelings and emotions. He sat back in his chair and wondered what it would be like to get back together with her, what it would be like to have her and Kira in his life permanently.

He shook his head as if to turn off the thoughts. He picked up the phone and called Raymond. “What up, man?”

“Hey, what’s up?” He hesitated. “I have great news! I won’t be working third shift any longer. Chief told me today that I’ve been reassigned to second shift starting Monday.”

Miles let out a loud yell. “That’s cool, man. I know you’re glad.”

“Yeah, the only problem is that the second shift commander is a jerk, but I can handle it. I’ll make it work. Working third shift is a beast.”

“I know it is, man,” Miles said, running his hand through his business card holder.
